Kylian Mbappé scored two goals in the second half and helped the selection of the France to become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the world Cup of Qatar this Saturday, defeating a combative team from Denmark by 2 x 1 in a tense confrontation.

After a goalless first half, in which the defending champions dominated, but failed to turn their chances into goals, full-back Theo Hernandez countered with Mbappé inside the area and the Paris St Germain player’s shot deflected off Andreas Christensen before entering 6 minutes into the second half.

Denmark equalized seven minutes later, Christensen making up for his involuntary help in the French goal with a powerful header that gave French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris no chance.

Mbappé finished the job in the 41st minute, latching on to Antoine Griezmann’s cross as he finished the ball on his thigh.

France lead Group D with six points, three clear of Australia, who beat Tunisia 1-0 earlier on Saturday. Danes and Tunisians have one point each.

France face Tunisia and Denmark face Socceroos in the last round of the first phase.
