The President of the Central Bank of IndonesiaPerry Warjiyo, said on Monday that the country’s planned digital currency could be used in the future to buy goods in the metaverse🇧🇷

The Indonesian central bank launched the digital rupee project last week, following many central banks around the world who are developing the so-called central bank digital currencies (CBDCs)🇧🇷

Perry, speaking at an event about the digital rupee, added that the currency will use a technology platform that will be compatible with digital currencies from other central banks.

“…so, in terms of infrastructure, it can be integrated, interconnected and interoperable [com outros CBDCs]”, he said.

Perry said there will be an agreement between central banks on the exchange rate used for digital currencies and on their operational oversight, which includes electronic security risk and capital flow.

Southeast Asia’s largest economy currently bans the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, but allows transactions of digital assets in the futures market of commodities for investment purposes.

Indonesia’s central bank will roll out the digital rupee in stages, starting with wholesale CBDC to developing the digital rupee business model for currency operations and money market, and eventually a retail CBDC for everyday use.
