the spanish group Iberdrola said on Thursday that it plans to install in Brazil its first floating photovoltaic solar plant in the world.
The project, conducted by its Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergywill be built on the water surface of the Açude do Xaréu, on the island of Fernando de Noronha, where Iberdrola is developing various sustainable energy solutions.
The implementation of the venture, which should start before the end of the year, will involve investments of 2 million euros, said the electric company.
This initiative is carried out in conjunction with the Pernambuco Sanitation Company (Compesa)operator of the water and sewage distribution network on the island, and is supported by the regulatory agency’s Energy Efficiency Program Aneel.
With a power of 630 kilowatts (kW), the floating plant will generate around 1,240 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy per year, enough to cover more than 50% of Compesa’s energy consumption on the island.
“The development of its first floating solar plant will allow the Iberdrola group to test this new technology and analyze its possible expansion,” the company said in a statement.
Neoenergia has been developing several sustainable solutions in Fernando de Noronha, such as solar power plants to supply electric vehicles that travel around the island and the installation of smart electrical networks.
