Ethanol sales rise 1.2% in the 1st fortnight with anhydrous boost; grinding is residual, says Unica

the sales of ethanol by production units in the center-south of Brazil totaled 1.09 billion liters in the first half of February, an increase of 1.20% compared to the same period of the 2021/2022 harvest, boosted by the sale of anhydrous biofuel, informed the Sugarcane Industry Union (Unica)also pointing to a residual grinding in the 2022/23 season, which is nearing its end.

In the internal market, the sale of anhydrous ethanol (used in the mixture of 27% in gasoline) increased 10.59% in the first half of February, to 497.02 million liters.

“The volume sold in the first half of the month also lost steam when compared to the second half of January”, noted Unica.

However, in the crop year, sales remain on positive ground when compared to the past agricultural cycle, with 13.78 billion liters of hydrous, an increase of 0.60% compared to the 2021/2022 crop.

Considering only the anhydrous, in the accumulated of the 2022/2023 harvest, the plants sold 9.75 billion liters, an increase of 8.59% in relation to the 2021/2022 cycle, which demonstrates the strength of the gasoline market in the midst of changes in the taxation that took away the competitiveness of hydrous renewable fuel.

Sugarcane crushing in the center-south of Brazil totaled just 73,000 tons in the first half of February, as the sector is in the off-season. Sugar production reached just 2,000 tons.

At the end of the fortnight, 12 units remained in operation in the center-south, including a sugarcane processing unit and 11 companies that manufacture ethanol from corn.

Of the total ethanol manufactured in the fortnight, 98% were made from corn, registering a production of 202.32 million liters this year against 157.24 million liters in the same period of the 2021/2022 cycle, Unica said.
