To commercial representative two USA, Katherine Tai, said the United States will continue to press for members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) agree on an intellectual property framework for vaccines from Covid-19 after a major entity meeting scheduled for next week was postponed on Friday.
Delaying the Geneva meeting due to travel restrictions and concerns over the spread of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus complicates Tai’s plans to promote his vision of WTO reform.
In a couple of tweets, Tai said the postponement “is a reminder that we still have a lot of work to do to end the pandemic.”
The general director of OMC, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said he wants the negotiations to continue, despite the absence of face-to-face meetings, while the delegations of the countries based in Geneva must have autonomy to reach agreements, especially on vaccines.
Tai recently told reporters that the WTO, which was established to regulate and facilitate international trade, cannot return to its status quo and needs a new vision and energy to stay relevant in a economy rapidly changing global environment.
