Taiwan is a “walker” who will eventually return home, not a chess piece to play with, said the top government diplomat. China this Monday, provoking a scathing rebuttal from the island’s government.

China vindicates Taiwan, which has a democratic government, like its own territory, having intensified military and diplomatic pressure over the past two years to assert its claims for sovereignty, which has caused anger in Taiwan and deep concern in the U.S.

Speaking in Beijing, State Adviser and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the cause of the current tensions is the Taiwanese government’s attempts to “count on the United States for independence”, and the US and other countries try to ” use Taiwan to control China”.

“It is these perverse actions that change the status quo and undermine peace in the Taiwan Straits, violating the international community’s consensus and the basic norms of international relations,” said Wang, former head of the Chinese Office for Taiwan Affairs.

In response, China has adopted “vigorous countermeasures” to “shake the arrogance” of those seeking formal Taiwanese independence, he said.

“Taiwan is a wanderer who will eventually return home, not a chess piece for others to use. China needs to be and will be reunified,” he added.

The Continental Affairs Council, Taiwan’s policy-making body for China, said in response that the island was never part of the People’s Republic of China.
