Christmas weekend has thousands of flights canceled around the world for fear of Ômicron

Commercial airlines around the world canceled more than 4,500 flights over the Christmas weekend as a growing wave of infections caused by Covid-19, caused by the variant Omicron, created greater uncertainty among vacation travelers.

Airlines globally canceled at least 2,401 flights on Friday, which fell on Christmas Eve and is a typically heavy day for air travel, according to a running count on flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

Almost 10,000 flights were delayed.

The site showed that 1,779 Christmas flights were canceled worldwide, along with 402 more that were scheduled for Sunday.

Among the first airlines of the USA Reporting a flurry of holiday weekend cancellations are United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which cut nearly 280 flights booked on Friday alone, citing staff shortages amid rising Covid-19 infections.

No United Kingdom, many industries and transport networks struggled with staff shortages as sick workers isolated themselves, while hospitals warned of the risk of impacting patient safety.
