Inclined to desertion: Yanukovych announced a new suspicion

The Office of the Attorney General has reported suspicions to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych of inciting desertion. This was reported on the website of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

“According to the investigation, on February 23, 2014, the former president of Ukraine, while on the territory of one of the military units of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation in the Gagarinsky district of the city of Sevastopol, incited the military personnel of the State Security Department of Ukraine, who were directly performing tasks to ensure his personal security, to the point of desertion”the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

As a result of such actions by the ex-president of Ukraine, the former deputy head of the State Security Department of Ukraine – head of the Security Service of the President of Ukraine evaded further military service and left for the Russian Federation, the report says.

Pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings is carried out by investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation.

Summoned to the State Bureau of Investigation

The State Bureau of Investigation summoned the fugitive ex-president for questioning on February 9.

Yanukovych was summoned as part of the criminal proceedings on the desertion of employees of the State Protection Department, which also includes the former deputy head of the UGO – head of the security service of the fugitive president Konstantin Kobzar.

The subpoena stated that Yanukovych must appear “to receive notice of suspicion in criminal proceedings … and to be interrogated as a suspect.”

Trials of Yanukovych in Ukraine

  • On October 7, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court chose in absentia a measure of restraint for ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who is hiding in Russia. He was arrested in absentia in the case of the seizure of the lands of the Mezhyhirya residence.
  • On August 25, 2021, the investigating judge of the VAKS granted the request of the NABU detective to grant permission to conduct a special pre-trial investigation against the former owner of the Mezhyhirya state residence and his son.
  • The Yanukovychs are suspected of illegally using a complex of structures on the territory of the Vyshgorodsky district in their favor. The damage caused to the state is estimated at more than UAH 500 million.
  • In addition, Yanukovych began to sue the Verkhovna Rada. He filed a lawsuit in a dispute over the recognition of the fact of his self-withdrawal from exercising the constitutional powers of the President of Ukraine.
  • Sergei Garmash, a member of the Ukrainian delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group, said that Russia could make ex-president Viktor Yanukovych a pretext for invading Ukraine, as his request to send troops to Ukraine remains in the Kremlin.
