The Commission has authorized the marketing of domestic crickets (Acheta domesticus) as a novel food in the EU. It is the third insect approved by the EU. Previous authorizations concerned dried meal moths and migratory locust. Like locusts, house crickets will also be available frozen whole, dried whole, and powdered.
The authorization had been approved by the EU states in December, after the scientific opinion of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA). Products containing these novel foods will be labeled to warn of any potential allergic reactions.
Already part of the daily diet of hundreds of millions of people around the world, in recent years insects have also become of interest in Europe, both for the market and for the EU strategies for the sustainability of food systems, in search of low-cost quality protein sources with a low environmental impact.
