Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, which expands sanctions against blogger Anatoly Shariy and journalist Igor Guzhva.

The National Security and Defense Council made changes to the sanctions packages against blogger Anatoly and his wife and colleague Olga Shariy, Olga Shariy’s mother Alla Bondarenko and Information Agency Shariy.Net LLC, as well as editor-in-chief of the Strana.ua website Igor Guzhva and related Anna Solntseva and Lyubov Lukashina.

In addition, not only the media of Shariy and Guzhva should be blocked, but also services similar in content, that is, “mirror” sites.

The packages of sanctions against accomplices of the invaders in Crimea and Donbass have also been changed. In particular, the changes concern restrictions against the “deputy prosecutor general” of the so-called “LPR” Vadim Lyashchenko and three members of the so-called “territorial election commissions” in Russian-occupied Crimea – Natalia Kovalenko (Babenko), Alexandra Osetrova and Yulia Rybakova.

What is Sharia accused of?

In February 2021, Anatoly Shariy was informed of suspicion of treason and inciting ethnic, racial or religious enmity and hatred. The SBU noted that he could act on the orders of foreign structures. After that, he was put on the wanted list. The Segodnya website has already explained what this blogger is known for and why he is accused of treason.

In May, Ukrainian media reported that Lithuania had stripped Anatoly Shariy of his political refugee status. Especially for “Today” he exclusively commented on this decision.

In August, the National Security and Defense Council imposed sanctions against Shariy and his information resource.

What is Guzhva accused of?

In the summer of 2017, Igor Guzhva, editor-in-chief of the Strana.ua online publication, was detained in Kiev. According to Yuriy Lutsenko, then Prosecutor General, Guzhva demanded and received 10,000 dollars for not posting compromising materials on the current politician; the investigation has video and photo evidence of this offense at its disposal.

Guzhva himself explained the reason for his detention. According to him, a falsified case is being “sewn” against him, and it was allegedly they tried to provoke him to take money, which, according to him, he refused.

Guzhva was released on bail, and a year later he was already in Vienna, where he asked the Austrian authorities for political asylum.
