Mafia: Dia seizes 3 million plastic recycling entrepreneur assets

(ANSA) – CATANIA, FEBRUARY 17 – About three million euros worth of assets have been seized by Dia di Catania from an entrepreneur in the plastics trade and waste collection sector in the province of Ragusa. The provision was issued by the Court of Catania at the joint request of the Etna district prosecutor and the director of Dia.

The entrepreneur, already convicted of drug trafficking, is also involved in other investigations by the Caltanissetta prosecutor’s office with the accusation of “having been part of a mafia organization aimed at committing extortion against agricultural entrepreneurs”. He was recently arrested at the request of the Public Prosecutor of Catania because he allegedly made use of the intimidating capacity of the clan to monopolize the collection of discarded plastics from greenhouses in the province of Ragusa, forcing farmers to transfer them exclusively to a single company “. According to the accusation, the entrepreneur would have “structured his economic activities with the support of leading exponents of the Carbonaro-Dominante clan of the ‘Stidda'”. Criminal group which, investigators underline, would have assumed a position of absolute monopoly in the flourishing sector of recycling of plastic materials used in agriculture. The Prevention Measures section of the Court of Catania ordered the seizure, aimed at confiscation, of assets attributable to the entrepreneur: three companies operating in the plastic trade and recycling sector, a property, three cars and a motorcycle, for a total value estimated by investigators at around three million euros (ANSA).
