President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that before the country’s intention to join NATO was enshrined in the constitution, it was necessary to hold a national referendum on this issue. However, as you know, in 2019 the Verkhovna Rada made such a decision without a referendum.

“In general, I think that such issues should be decided precisely at a referendum, such issues should be decided only by the people, and then they should be introduced into the Constitution. But we are where we already eatb,” the head of state said.
Zelensky added that most of the NATO countries consider it wrong for Ukraine to include a clause on striving for a military bloc in the country’s Basic Law. “But we have it. This is exactly the choice of the Ukrainian people: where we want to be. But not the choice of the Ukrainian people, when we will be there, depends not only on us“, he stressed.
The President understands that now the question of the exact date of NATO membership is not worth it, but it is necessary to move in this direction. “The path to NATO and the EU is very long. On this path, Ukraine needs some security guarantees. NATO is a guarantee of security, this is where we want to go. This guarantee means that we will not lose our independence.“Zelensky said.
