(ANSA) – FOGGIA, 22 FEB – The Italian railway network was sentenced by the Court of Rome to compensate the widow and two children of a worker from Foggia who died at the age of 69 of mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos by 200,000 euros. The appeal was presented by lawyers Daniela Cataldo and Ezio Bonanni, the latter president of the National Asbestos Observatory.
According to the reconstruction of the incident provided by the association, since 1969 the victim has worked as a mechanical repairman in the major repair shops of Foggia di Rfi, taking care of the maintenance of railway rolling stock, engines, pipes, electrical cables. After 14 months, it is specified, he was diagnosed with asbestos exposure mesothelioma. He died at 69, leaving behind his wife of 63, and their two children aged 37 and 33. The company, as reported by the observatory, had contested the appeal, stating that “only since the mid-1970s has there been awareness of the danger of exposure to asbestos fibers”. Judge Antonella Casoli recalled previous sentences reiterated the responsibility for having exposed the worker “to very high concentrations of asbestos dust and fibers, contained in the materials handled and in any case air-dispersed in the work environment”. According to the judge, RFI allegedly “failed to provide workers with personal protective equipment, such as masks and overalls, and to inform the worker about the risks associated with asbestos”.
