Claudio Mandia’s body should return to Italy between tomorrow and Saturday. This is what we learn from sources in the Municipality of Battipaglia (Salerno), the city where the funeral of the 17-year-old found dead in a New York college will be celebrated. The body has obtained the authorization for repatriation from the American authorities. In the next few hours, the return to Italy of the family members who had joined the student in America to celebrate his 18th birthday is also expected, but arrived at the airport they received the tragic news.
On the causes of death, which according to the US police occurred by hanging, further investigations are underway to ascertain whether there was any responsibility on the part of third parties.
The young man died in the night between Thursday and Friday. His parents arrived on Saturday for his eighteenth birthday and warned of the tragedy upon their arrival. At first there was talk of illness. Then other hypotheses, extreme play, youth violence, and finally the suicide trail. In a first statement released in the US by the lawyer, there was talk of “unimaginable treatment” to which the young man had been subjected. Yesterday a new note – reported by the media – in which it is claimed that “primitive measures were the direct cause of Claudio’s suicide while he was locked up in solitary confinement”. The statement does not go beyond the term ‘primitive measures’. To understand more, it will be necessary to wait for the outcome of the investigations by the local police who will also have to ascertain the nature of the young man’s de facto ‘detention’ in the days in which he was isolated from the rest of the class.
