(ANSA) – BARI, 03 MAR – “I am not in favor of erasing pieces of history, perhaps an epigraph can be placed next to it to explain the position of the city with respect to that plaque”.

This was stated by the mayor of Bari and ANCI president, Antonio Decaro, responding, on the sidelines of the meeting in the Prefecture on the reception of Ukrainian refugees, to the journalists’ question on the online petition launched in Bari, which has already exceeded 12 thousand signatures, to remove the plaque with Putin’s signature from the statue of St. Nicholas in the old city, which was donated by the president of the Russian Federation.

“As a gesture of solidarity in recent days I wanted to bring the flowers under the statue of St. Nicholas – recalled the mayor – which has a symbolic value because he is the saint of daring enterprises, of brotherhood, of the union between East and West, and also because that statue was donated to the city of Bari by Putin, but I believe that erasing pieces of history is never appropriate, except in completely exceptional cases “.
