Ukraine: refugees fleeing the war landed in Olbia

(ANSA) – OLBIA, 08 MAR – The two solidarity caravans have arrived in Olbia which brought about 160 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war to Sardinia. Volunteers and exiles arrived at the port of Olbia shortly after 8 on board the Grimaldi ship which sailed from Livorno last night.

A caravan, organized by the Interparliamentary Union for Friendship between Italy and Ukraine, led by the Sardinian deputy and coordinator of Forza Italia, Ugo Cappellacci, and by the honorary consul of Ukraine on the island, Anthony Grande, after having brought aid to the populations under siege, on the border between Poland and Ukraine he took on board about sixty children, including many orphans aged 6 to 12, and twenty women who accompany them away from the bombings. The other was organized by the volunteers of the Anas network of Sardinia and led by Claudio Cugusi he brought a load of medicines to Ukraine and on his return, with a journey battered by a thousand difficulties, together with the Sos association of Elmas he brought in Italy about 80 refugees: most of them went to Puglia after stopping over in Ljubljana, the others, about twenty, landed on the island. During the journey to reach Livorno, their caravan was stopped by a breakdown in one of the vehicles on which they were traveling and the group risked not arriving in time at the port for boarding.

Everything went well and now volunteers and refugees are in Sardinia.

“We have to thank the Grimaldi company who offered us a trip in the cabin and dinner”, says Claudio Cugusi, exhausted by the crossing. “I will never forget what I saw. Seeing desperation in people’s eyes is something truly overwhelming, People like us, who overnight are forced to abandon everything and find themselves with their whole life in a sack”. Ukrainians fleeing from Odessa and Donetsk will be hosted in two structures in Cagliari, one made available by the Municipality, the other by the regional Labor Department through Caritas. Others will find family accommodation in Cagliari and Ossi, where they will be reunited with their loved ones who already live in Sardinia. (HANDLE).
