(ANSA) – REGGIO CALABRIA, 08 MAR – A new “local” of ‘Ndrangheta active and confederate to the clan of the Taverniti di Gerocarne, in the Vibonese area was discovered in Stilo, in Locride, as part of the “Double Sgarro” investigation conducted by the carabinieri and coordinated by the Dda of Reggio Calabria. At the request of the prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri and the adjunct Giuseppe Lombardo, the investigating judge issued 9 precautionary custody orders: 7 in prison and 2 under house arrest.
The disputed crimes are mafia-type criminal association, an association aimed at illicit drug trafficking, production, trafficking and possession of drugs.
The investigation coordinated by the substitutes Simona Ferraiolo, now moved to Milan, and Domenico Cappelleri, started from the statements of a collaborator of justice collected during the investigations on some episodes that occurred in the Stilaro area, including the murder of Marcello Geracitano which took place in 2005 and that of Giuseppe Gerace in 2012. The bloody facts are not disputed, but thanks to a review of previous investigative activities, today’s arrests have been reached with which the prosecutors have disrupted a criminal group composed mainly of subjects linked by family ties and connected to the Taverniti clan.
At the center of the investigation are the Mafia families of the Stilaro who, according to the investigating magistrate Giovanna Sergi, are “interested in guaranteeing control of the territory with the usual methodology of impositions and violent conditioning even in public administrative activity”. Cosche that, according to the magistrates, “for some time now they have become the architects of the condition of severe depression that governs those Calabrian areas, completely subservient to the mafia arrogance that imposes its own rules and oppresses the population with violence”.
The “Doppio sgarro” investigation made it possible to ascertain the roles and degrees of the affiliates, mostly members of the Spanish family, according to the prosecutors at the head of the new ‘Ndrangheta’ local ‘operating in Stilo. The mafia faction was active in damage, extortion and illegal pastures and, thanks also to the availability of weapons, according to the carabinieri, it would have engendered in the population a widespread fear and sense of silence.
