Metal waste traffic, 33 ‘Ferromat’ operation arrests

(ANSA) – TURIN, 08 MAR – 33 people arrested, 50 searches and seizures for over 270 million euros are the first budget of the operation of the Turin financial police ‘Ferromat’, on the alleged illicit trafficking of metal waste and the issue and use of documents certifying non-existent transactions. The investigation, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Turin prosecutor’s office, focuses on three distinct criminal associations which, according to the prosecution, thanks to false documentation, placed on the market ferrous scrap and metal waste purchased in the black and without the compliance requirements and traceability required by European legislation.

The ‘Ferromat’ operation involved about 300 financial police soldiers who carried out searches not only in Piedmont, but also in Lombardy, Liguria, Tuscany, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Campania, Puglia and Sicily.

According to investigators, the criminal groups had been active since 2015 and operated in Italy and abroad, particularly in Germany. The suspects allegedly presented false fiscal and administrative documentation to make regular, the investigators explain “large quantities of waste, hiding the real origin and correct traceability of the production, recovery and disposal chain”.

The false documentation would also have allowed the entrepreneurs using the material to deduct costs in black. Eight companies operating in the metal scrap trade sector that the yellow flames have placed under sequestration. (HANDLE).
