(ANSA) – PERUGIA, MARCH 14 – The solidarity campaign of the friars minor conventual of the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi in support of the Franciscan convents in Ukraine is underway. “Our brothers – explain the friars of Assisi – are at the forefront in welcoming refugees fleeing the war: they welcome desperate families every day and accompany them to the border. Let’s give a Franciscan hand to Ukraine, just a small gesture: a text message or a landline call at 45515 to support our friars alongside fleeing populations “.

“The images of suffering of the Ukrainian sisters and brothers – commented the spokesman of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, Fra Giulio Cesareo – are before the eyes of all of us. We cannot turn the other way. St. Francis through his life and his his example has left us the task of being close to those who suffer. In his name the Franciscan friars, our brothers, work every day to alleviate the suffering of those fleeing from war, because love and solidarity are truly the light that conquers evil “.

In this humanitarian emergency, the five communities of the Custody of the Holy Cross in Ukraine took action “in a direct, rapid and efficient way” – the friars say – to welcome and support refugees. “They are families, especially women with children and the elderly. They need everything: food, clothes, hygienic products, sanitary products and a safe place to sleep and from which to leave. In some convents we have ‘built’ air-raid shelters – said Fr. Mikola Orach, friar of the convent of Lviv – and we also deal with the movement of people to safe borders; there are other brothers of ours who help them to continue their journey.

Real ‘Franciscan taxis’ that guarantee a landing place for those looking for hope away from bombing, beyond the borders “.

To support the campaign “A Franciscan Hand to Ukraine”, up to April 1, it is possible to donate 2 euros to 45515 with a text message from a mobile phone, or 5 or 10 euros with a call from a landline.
