Ukrainian mothers and children saved in Austria by Father Civile Dolceacqua

(ANSA) – VENTIMIGLIA, 21 MAR – Two mothers fleeing the war with their respective children, a baby just a few months old, named George who became the mascot of the humanitarian trip and a girl of about 11 years old, were taken in charge by the Protection civilian of Dolceacqua, during an expedition that left Ventimiglia on 18 March and headed to Ukraine, in particular to the refugee camp of Beregsurany, on the border with Hungary. The two families, reached at the railway station of Villach, in Austria, were taken to Ventimiglia, where they were reunited with some of their French compatriots, who are now hosting them in the parts of Menton, in France.

“When we received the request for help – said Igor Cassini of the Civil Protection of Dolceacqua, with the president Paolo Cammareri – we immediately disconnected a vehicle from the mobile column, which was returning to Italy from the border with Ukraine, to go to Austria. These are two mothers who fled the bombing near Lviv, where they lost everything “.

The two women with their children, who had to pay a ride to Krakow, Poland, then continued by train to Austria. George’s mom, in particular, ran away with her baby in her arms, being too young to walk. She took with her a few personal effects collected in some bags, unable to move with too heavy a load, and she headed for Poland. The mobile column consisted of four civil protection vehicles of Dolceacqua, Ventimiglia and Pigna-Castelvittorio.

During the trip, which in less than two and a half days touched five states (Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Ukraine and Austria), about two and a half tons of humanitarian aid (especially medicines, personal hygiene items) were delivered. and newborns; blankets and food) and another family was rescued – consisting of a man with two elderly parents and his cousin with the latter’s thirteen-year-old daughter – who was brought to the province of Bergamo , where some friends were waiting for her.
