Train derailed over cliff, builders acquitted on appeal

(ANSA) – SAVONA, 28 MAR – All acquitted “because the fact does not exist” due to the landslide that in 2014 derailed an intercity train with 200 passengers that remained hovering on the cliff in the province of Savona. This was established by the sentence of the Court of Appeal of Genoa which overturned what was decided at first instance by the Court of Savona regarding the derailment of the Intercity 660 Milan-Ventimiglia train at Capo Rollo di Andora (Savona), which took place on 17 January 2014. A landslide caused the derailment. In March 2020, the investigation led to the conviction of three people: the builder Damiano Bonomi and the technician Giovanni Bosi (2 years), and Franco Dagnino, former manager of Ferservizi Spa (20 months).

A parking terrace built over the railway collapsed. Right from the start, the defense argued that the failure was caused by a sudden and unpredictable event, due to the intense rainfall of the previous days that had “loaded” the aquifers under the slope. The three, accused of railway disaster, landslide and culpable collapse, have filed an appeal and now the acquittal has arrived with full formula. The reasons have not yet been disclosed. The same attorney general accepted the requests for acquittal, therefore a possible appeal to the Supreme Court seems to be excluded.

On the day of the tragedy, about 200 passengers were traveling on the convoy: over 2000m3 of earth and rocks fell on the railway line. The train hovered over the sea, without crashing: some passengers, the conductor and two train drivers were injured. The railway traffic in the west remained paralyzed (the section was a single track). The convoy was removed a little over a month later using a barge. (HANDLE).
