Theft in the Bari Basilica, St. Nicholas gold returned

(ANSA) – BARI, MARCH 30 – The treasures and gold of St. Nicholas stolen the night between March 21 and 22 were returned this morning in a solemn ceremony in the Basilica of Bari. The evangeliary with the three silver spheres, the gold ring and the medallion containing the sacred manna are returned to the reliquary of the statue of the patron saint, handed over from the hands of the policemen to those of the rector of the Basilica, Father Giovanni Distante. Attending the ceremony there was a crowd of faithful and onlookers who applauded for a long time when the treasures were extracted from the police cars in the square of the Basilica and then, when they were placed in the reliquary inside the church, they sang the song in dialect dedicated to the saint of Myra.

The ceremony took place in the presence of the commissioner Giuseppe Bisogno, the prosecutor Roberto Rossi with the prosecutor Angela Morea who coordinated the investigations of the police, the prefect Antonella Bellomo and the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro. The precious sacred objects had been found by the agents of the Flying Squad and the Flying Squad in the early afternoon of March 26, hidden inside a backpack covered with earth and wild grass, close to the cottage where the alleged thief, a 48-year-old, was hiding Tunisian who has been in prison since 23 March.
