(ANSA) – FARINDOLA, 01 APR – From the early hours of the morning the panel of experts including those appointed by the Gup of the Pescara court found itself in Rigopiano as part of the trial for the tragedy in which 29 people died: an inspection in contradictory that must lead to clarifying the true causes of the disaster that occurred on January 18, 2017 when an avalanche overwhelmed the hotel resort located in the Municipality of Farindola (Pescara).
In Rigopiano there was also Giampaolo Matrone, a pastry chef from Monterotondo (Rome), a survivor and a symbol of the disaster, together with other relatives of the victims, because he was miraculously extracted alive after 62 hours under the rubble.
The next hearing, not yet scheduled, should take place at the end of May precisely to allow the experts, including that of the Politecnico di Milano, to present the results of the investigations carried out. Of the 30 defendants, 29 were those who chose the abbreviated procedure: representatives of the Abruzzo Region, the Province of Pescara, the Prefecture of Pescara and the Municipality of Farindola, some representatives of the destroyed hotel and 7 prefectures accused of misdirection in a file which was then reunited to the parent proceeding.
The shortened procedure will be discussed in front of the gup Gianluca Sarandrea: first, however, the advice on the prosecution and defense panel reports must be filed. In recent months, the judge had appointed a panel of experts to settle the question concerning the origin of the avalanche of January 18, because the expert assessments produced by the prosecution and the defenses are conflicting. The report of the prosecution points, among other things, on the failure to produce the avalanche map, on the clearing of the access roads to the resort at high altitude and on the presumed late setting up of the rescue coordination center; that of the defenses concerns the fatality, the unpredictable nature of the earthquake that preceded the avalanche.
