Ukraine: refugees away from Rimini, ‘treated like prisoners’

(ANSA) – RIMINI, APRIL 01 – The transfers of Ukrainian refugees from Emilia-Romagna outside the region continue, in particular from Rimini, the Italian city with the highest number of people who fled the war. This morning a bus left a hotel in the city, but it is not known where.

By the time all the refugees had been brought on board, the driver was still awaiting instructions on their destination.

There was talk of a Cas of Piedmont, but other regions have also been mentioned. In the morning, two officials of the prefecture presented themselves at the Brenta hotel with a list of 46 names. In the end, only about thirty agreed to leave the city. The others had to sign a document stating that they refused state aid.

The procedures went smoothly, but many refugees regretted that they did not know where they would go. Almost all of them had chosen to take refuge in Rimini, because they have friends and relatives there, but not everyone had space to host them. “Last night at 8 we were told that we had to pack our bags”, two women who came with children and grandchildren, one from Kiev, the other from Dnipro, say outside the hotel. On the goal “nobody knows anything, it’s really terrible – they say – it’s worse than prisoners”.

The hotelier of another structure says he is still in contact with the people transferred in recent days, who tell of situations of degradation. “There are bugs in the mattresses.” In the chats of the Rimini hoteliers, photos of moldy walls, uncovered electrical cables and pinches of insects sent by refugees circulate.
