‘Dead because they do not know English at 118’, the Lazio Region denies

Judgment Cucchi, Ilaria:

No delay in the arrival of the ambulance and no problems in the telephone conversation in English. The Lazio Region rejects the accusations of alleged delays in rescuing in the case of Janna Gommelt, a German tourist who died on 20 January after being taken ill while she was in Focene, a center of the Roman coast, aboard a camper together with the his partner Michael Douglas, 34, who reported that the rescuers took over 40 minutes to reach the facility for campers where they had been for a few days with the intention of embarking at Fiumicino for Barcelona. A delay, according to the man, also due to the fact that the 118 operator did not speak English. A reconstruction contested by the Ente di viale Cristoforo Colombo and by Ares itself, the regional health emergency company, which made public the telephone call, which took place at 3.41 pm and lasted about two minutes, of the request for intervention. An interview in English during which the user was geolocated with the coordinates of latitude and longitude.

“The ambulance arrived in 18 minutes” explains Ares management, adding that the health teams did not find anyone in the place where the man had reported being as he had “decided to move independently”. The company states that “from the printouts in our possession it appears that 18 minutes have elapsed from the end of the call to the arrival of the ambulance and car ‘arrival on the spot, the health teams did not find anyone, since the man had independently decided to move “.

On the telephone triage that preceded the rescue, however, an audit is underway by the Health Department of the Lazio Region. “The triage was particularly thorough – 118 specifies – The central staff therefore answered the user’s call with the interpreter already on line”. The health workers, however, after having identified the camper, could not help but ascertain the death of the young women. The body was then transferred to the Verano morgue in Rome.

The Civitavecchia prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation file on the matter to be able to carry out the autopsy. The examination was carried out on January 26 and about a month later the investigators gave the authorization for the return of the body in order to proceed with the cremation. “The prosecutors immediately opened an investigation for instigation to suicide – explains the lawyer Manuele Piccioni, lawyer of the tourist’s family. A case perhaps hypothesized as a necessary act to be able to proceed with the examinations on the body”. The lawyer explains that after receiving the green light for the return of the body, he did not receive any other communications from the Prosecutor’s Office.

“I have never been contacted and my clients have never been summoned. We are awaiting the filing of the technical advice, to date I have no news of this filing so I cannot say anything about the conclusions on the causes of death”, specifies the criminal lawyer, adding having met the young woman’s partner on one occasion when the family went to her office. “I don’t know anything about the interlocutions Douglas had with 118. About what happened in the camper, she only told me that the girl suddenly collapsed and felt ill”, concludes Piccioni.
