The Aniene club says goodbye to discrimination and opens up to women: now they too can become members. The vote in the historic sports club in Rome took place last night, with an open vote by show of hands. In the famous Sala delle showcases, among old photos of rowers and famous athletes of the Club such as the champion Federica Pellegrini, the Aniene has thus decided to change its statute with the ok of 237 members and the no 150 irreducible ‘only for men ‘. The president of Coni Giovanni Malagò himself and the president of the circle Massimo Fabbricini welcomed the members. It was from them that the input and the need to go beyond the norm that relegated the club only to men except to honorary members would come, from Pellegrini to Flavia Pennetta who, however, were precluded from the right to vote. In a crowded room, with the comings and goings of members who alternated at the bar to discuss the issue, the different positions were expressed before the vote: from what we learn from members present, those in favor highlighted the fact “that the society around changes “and that integration is a constitutive value of sport and the associations that represent it. So “no more gender discrimination”. Some have asked for time to reflect: some would have asked for a postponement to face the change of course “with more serenity”. There were also moments of tension during the discussion: among the diehards there are those who have referred to “tradition” by resisting change. To oppose the entry of women not only historical and mature members, but also some young people who stressed that “the internal regulation has nothing to do with rights”. As a result of this discussion, however, the amendment to the statute prevailed. Article 4 has been changed: the wording ‘male over 18′ has been removed. Someone said they wanted to challenge the shareholders’ meeting resolution, but the club’s’ colleagues’ insisted on asking to rethink such a decision. In any case, after 130 years, the club overlooking the Tiber is no longer the exclusive prerogative of men. The Aniene opened to women: exclusive yes but without discriminating against gender.
