Wine made with sugar, seized cellar in Monreale

(ANSA) – MONREALE, 08 APR – Wine was produced by mixing water and sugar. The financiers of the provincial command of Palermo, with the collaboration of officials of the Frodi repression inspectorate of the ministry of agricultural, food and forestry policies, have seized an oenological establishment based in Monreale (Pa) which produced sophisticated wine. Over 3 million and 307 thousand liters of wine for which it was not possible to trace the origin and provenance, for a value of 5 million and 160 thousand euros.

During the investigations, searches and seizures were carried out throughout the national territory, to block the lots of adulterated product distributed by the owner of the winery with the help of 8 other subjects accused, among others, of the crimes of counterfeiting of geographical indications or denominations of origin of agri-food products, fraud in the exercise of trade and sale of non-genuine food substances. The investigations carried out by the financiers of the Partinico company, to protect the consumer and made in Italy, made it possible to ascertain that the winery had implemented complex accounting tricks with the help of other sister companies. These would have falsely registered the entry into deposits of musts, grapes and wines to create an apparent legality of wine products, marketed with false Sicilian designations of origin and geographical indications, also obtained through the fraudulent use of sugar.

The batches of beet sugar and cane sugar – purchased in black from a Palermo company – arrived at the Monreale winery, where they were mixed with water, thus obtaining a compound for the preparation of false wines and musts. After blending, the product obtained was destined for marketing in catering and private businesses. Thanks to the video footage at the cellar and the investigations on the cell phones of the suspects carried out by the Fiamme Gialle di Partinico it was possible to ascertain that, between 2020 and 2021, over 4 million liters of vinous product were sold throughout the national territory.
