(ANSA) – TURIN, APRIL 09 – An avalanche broke off in the late morning in Acceglio (Cuneo), in the upper Maira Valley, involving a group of 4 ski mountaineers. According to preliminary information, three managed to escape, while the fourth was buried under snow. On site the Fire Brigade, with a helicopter, a team from Cuneo, the volunteers from Dronero (Cuneo) and the Turin dog unit. The Piedmontese Alpine and Speleological Rescue and 118 were also alerted.
The avalanche broke off in the Punta Vallonasso area, at 2,885 meters above sea level. It was the three ski mountaineers who managed to get to safety to make the emergency call and to extract their hiking companion from the snow, whose conditions are not known at the moment.
Due to the strong wind and snow at the end of March and early April, today the avalanche risk in Piedmont is marked (grade 3 on the European scale that reaches 5) on the western sectors, including the Maira Valley, and in the north, between moderate and weak elsewhere. (HANDLE).
