(ANSA) – MILAN, 09 APR – “Against the war, against the war economy and against the ‘war government’ by Draghi”: this is the slogan with which the base unions – Cub, Adl, Cobas, Sgb today , Unicobas and Usi Cit – have called a general strike for 20 May. The decision was taken by the National Assembly of grassroots trade unionism which met today in Milan.

“The first consequences are already tangible both in Italy and throughout Europe, with the increase in gas and electricity tariffs and the sanctions that turn against the EU, in particular against the Italian and German economies – say the trade unions. – In Italy, layoffs and an increase in unemployment are on the agenda, while a record of military spending has been reached to the detriment of the urgent social needs of health, education, transport, housing. To this must be added the stoppages of many production chains. due to the scarcity of raw materials, the growth of their costs and those of energy, the delocalization processes of recent decades and, last but not least, the huge privatizations of strategic sectors for the country’s economy.

As if that were not enough, the government is preparing to launch a plan for a real war economy with an increase in defense spending towards the 2% target “.

“We believe the strike is needed to stem the militarist drift imposed by the United States as soon as possible – underlines Walter Montagnoli, national secretary of the CUB -. It is in fact Europe that pays the highest price of the conflict in Ukraine, not the US. As usual. in war conflicts it is the workers and the popular classes who pay a great deal “. (HANDLE).
