A 40 to 0 that risks going down in history for the number of goals, but above all for the controversy. Especially because there were kids in the very young category, aged 14 and 15, on the pitch. The referee had no tools in hand (the regulation does not provide for a triple whistle in these cases) to stop the game. And the result went to the scoresheet. With the regional Football Federation which – as told by the newspaper ‘La Nuova Sardegna’ – intends to deepen the subject to understand what happened between Fanum Orosei and La Caletta (in the province of Nuoro) and also in previous matches. “We have to be more attentive to children than to results”, explains the regional president Gianni Cadoni to ANSA.
The conditions for a balanced race were not there. The visiting team entered the field with only ten players, with an average age lower than that of the opponents. It can happen at the end of the season. But it wasn’t just any match. To win the first place in the group, Fanum Orosei needed to score many goals, at least 35. This was to make a difference with Lupi Goceano from Bono (Sassari), paired at the top of the table. The week before, Lupi had beaten La Caletta 22 to 0.
A striking score, too. But in the last race it almost doubled. It was in the air. The two companies would have asked, to avoid what happened, to make a play-off rather than relying on goal difference.
But it was also a challenge to the rules: impossible to overturn the rules in the race. “We have not decided anything yet because we are verifying everything that needs to be verified – the words of the president of the regional FIGC, Gianni Cadoni -. I have heard the company La Caletta. And I have felt very serene. This comforts me, but not reassures me. What can be done in the future? The rules must be respected, but possibly exceptions could be found, clearly in agreement with the National Amateur League when it is understood that there are situations that in some way can harm those who practice this sport, especially when it comes to kids “.
