Pope: at the Civitavecchia prison for the washing of the feet

(ANSA) – VATICAN CITY, APRIL 13 – Tomorrow afternoon, the Pope will go to the Civitavecchia prison for Mass in Coena Domini (the celebration in which the washing of the feet is repeated). The prison chaplains report it. The event, they explain, is considered a “private visit”.

“We are grateful to the Holy Father – said the head of the chaplains of the prisons of Italy, Fr Raffaele Grimaldi – for having chosen, once again, an existential periphery, a place of proximity to re-launch a message of closeness and hope to the world. Washing the feet of twelve prisoners, bending down before their poverty and weaknesses, washing the feet of those who have walked paths of violence, trampling on the rights of the innocent means for us operators a humble, incomprehensible and scandalous gesture that Jesus the Good Shepherd , he delivered to humanity “. Privately, in the Civitavecchia Penal Institute which welcomes about 500 inmates where chaplains, pastoral workers and volunteers cross the threshold daily to support the inmates, Pope Francis will therefore repeat the gesture of Holy Thursday.

The Pope, from the beginning of his pontificate, celebrated Holy Thursday Mass outside the Vatican, visiting prisons or refugee centers. Last year he celebrated the event with Cardinal Angelo Becciu, in the private apartment of the same cardinal. (HANDLE).
