(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, APRIL 23 – During the Second World War, seven inhabitants of Castelnovo ne ‘Monti (Reggio Emilia), like many others in the area, died in the Nazi forced labor camp of Kahla, a German town in Thuringia. Today Kahla and Castelnovo ne ‘Monti have forged strong bonds of friendship, strengthened by frequent study and exchange trips by students. This relationship will be sealed tomorrow, on the occasion of April 25, when the twinning will be officially signed at the Bismantova Theater.

In Kahla there was a Nazi forced labor camp, the Reimahg underground factory where the German air force fighters were built. And it was precisely in those tunnels that several Reggio inhabitants, including seven inhabitants of Castelnovo, died after being rounded up in 1944 and passing through the Fossoli field. Even the end of the war could not bring peace to their family: after 1945, Kahla returned to East Germany, hosting a military base, and the search for the truth about the end of their loved ones was not possible until the fall of the Wall. of Berlin and the reunification of the country.

Since then, however, the two towns have decided to transform that dramatic memory into a friendship that has gradually strengthened over the years: every year the young Reggio students meet with their German peers, to build a peaceful future starting from from the knowledge of the horrors of the past.

So Castelnovo ne ‘Monti and Kahla have chosen the date of April 25 to celebrate and formalize their twinning, with a ceremony which will also be attended by the president of the Emilia-Romagna Region Stefano Bonaccini.
