(ANSA) – GENOA, APRIL 25 – Genoa celebrated April 25, recalling that it was the first city in northern Italy to free itself with a revolt supported by the intervention of the partisans who forced the Germans to surrender. During the speeches of the authorities in Piazza Matteotti, in front of a few thousand people, with many flags and banners of the Anpi, of Europe, of the CGIL, the mayor Marco Bucci and the governor Giovanni Toti were interrupted by the whistles and screams of a large group of supporters of Senator Mattia Crucioli, candidate for mayor, who protested against sending weapons to Ukraine and displayed a banner that read: “Genoa that resists does not foment war”.

From the stage, the speaker, the president emeritus of the Constitutional Court Giovanni Maria Flick, stated among other things that “pacifism is legitimate without ifs and buts, but it is not possible to decide on the right to resistance of other countries at war” . Flick then recalled that “Italy repudiates war” but underlining that in “Ukraine we are witnessing so many massacres”.

Interrupted by the whistles while wishing a “happy April 25”, Governor Toti replied: “Let’s celebrate a day that allows you to whistle too”. Then he thanked “doctors and nurses who allowed us to be here today to celebrate, after two years of hiatus due to Covid”. And he concluded: “Those who believe they can solve the situation with a few whistles have not fully understood the meaning of the day”.

Mayor Bucci highlighted how Genoa celebrates “April 25 united by the desire for freedom, democracy and peace”.

He recalled the “1800 dead” of the revolt, the deportees and “those who worked in factories boycotting weapons”. “The city unites on these values, it does not take them to the streets to share” she concluded, replying to the boos.

The square shouted “fascists” to the supporters of the senator and candidate Crucioli, then the band sang ‘Bella Ciao’ and ‘Whistle the wind’. (HANDLE).
