Euroflora: Genoese municipalities become ‘keepers of orchids’

Lavrov:

(ANSA) – GENOA, APRIL 26 – Colorful, rare and with bizarre shapes. Wild orchids are some species of which are at risk of extinction. To take care of these flowers that grow spontaneously on the Ligurian territory, special “custody agreements” were signed this morning at the Palestrine of the Parchi di Nervi. They were signed by the Aveto Regional Park, the Municipalities of Bogliasco, Camogli, Sestri Levante and Zoagli. Also present was the Municipality of Portofino, the first local Ligurian body to be “keeper of orchids”. With this agreement, the Municipalities will undertake actions for the care and conservation of the territory to protect wild orchids. With the Municipality of Portofino, the first Ligurian municipality to become a keeper of orchids in Liguria, the number of local authorities joining the network of orchid keepers in the region rises to six. The action is part of the LIFEorchids European project co-financed under the LIFE program. Orchids are protected and conserved because their habitat is at risk.

The agreements were signed during the meeting “LIFEorchids: discovering wild orchids and their guardians”, which was held this morning in Euroflora and was attended by Mariangela Girlanda of the University of Turin, Laura Cornara, UniGe, Jacopo Calevo , Royal Botanic Garden Kew and Mario Calbi, orchid expert. The LIFEorchids project network, with the University of Turin as leader, has among the partners the University of Genoa, the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of the Agricultural Economy of Sanremo, Legambiente Lombardia and Czech Union for Nature Conservation (Čsop), the Regional Park of Portofino, the management body of the Piedmontese Po Protected Areas.
