(ANSA) – VENICE, APRIL 27 – Venice has a new gondolier: Gioia Monti, whose name appeared yesterday on the new rankings drawn up by the Municipality of Venice, has won her place at the helm of a gondola.

Gioia, as she reports, is 31 years old and has two children and goes to represent, she says, the fourth generation in the family.

“This work began – he says – my great-grandfather Ugo”. The dream of following in the footsteps of his gods was born early, when he was 10 years old.

It could have been the desire of a little girl but “I took it very seriously – she says – At the time a friend of my grandfather gondolier told me that women were fine at home washing dishes”. Gioia is not new to the oar, where she will be as usual as a substitute to cover the absences of others; the first of her, over 10 years ago, was Giorgia Boscolo, also a daughter of art, who found a place at the San Tomà station.
