(ANSA) – VICENZA, APRIL 28 – Meri Mion was about to turn 13 on that April 28, 1945, while the streets rejoiced at the liberation of Vicenza and Northern Italy. To celebrate her birthday – she was the next day – and to celebrate free Italy, her mother prepared a beautiful cake for her. Which the little girl never tasted. Because a US soldier saw the cake on the windowsill to cool, he ‘stole’ it and shared it with his fellow soldiers. Today, 77 years later, that ‘wrong’ has been remedied. Meri Mion, 90 years old tomorrow, received from the US Army Command stationed in Vicenza the dessert that she had not been able to taste in April 1945: a large cake with cream and strawberries, garnished with a basket of eggs Easter eggs. It was Sergeant Peter Wallis, the recent winner of the competition for the best fighter of the European Command for the management of the installations, who handed the cake to Mrs. Mion, excited and moved.

Also present was Colonel Matthew Gomlak, commander of the American Garrison in Italy. Hundreds of people, including Italian soldiers, carabinieri, US veterans, Italian veterans and many citizens attended the ceremony, at the Giardini Salvi, very close to where the 88th Infantry Division fought in the city on April 28, 1945.

Ms. Mion was able to thank the US army, which wanted to remember her. He will take the cake home, to share it with her loved ones. “Tomorrow – she said – we will eat that dessert with my whole family, thinking about this wonderful day that I will never forget”. (HANDLE).
