(ANSA) – LIVORNO, APRIL 30 – A 51-year-old sailor from Cattolica died this afternoon in Livorno following an accident during one of the regattas organized as part of the Naval Academy International Sailing Week – City of Livorno.

The man, according to an initial reconstruction of the facts, would have been taken ill while he was on board and would have been violently hit by the boom before falling into the sea where he was recovered by the rescue network present during the regattas of the International Sailing Week.

The 118 staff then intervened when the boat that recovered the sailor docked at one of the piers that dot the coast of the Livorno city. The 51-year-old, the organizers explain, was then transported to the hospital “where, unfortunately, he died shortly after, despite all the care received”. The organizers also explain that the dynamics of the accident need to be clarified but the involvement of other boats is excluded.

The accident occurred during the Ilca category regatta where Laser boats compete. Condolence was expressed by the Municipality of Livorno which announces that “the shore events promoted by the Lem Foundation at the Sailing Week Village are canceled”. (HANDLE).
