(ANSA) – BARI, 07 MAY – Layers of waste were found buried outside the lots of the Martucci landfill, in the Bari area, during core drilling operations. This was announced by the mayors of Mola di Bari and Conversano, Giuseppe Colonna and Giuseppe Lovascio, who informed the Prosecutor’s Office and reiterated the appeal to the Region not to “reopen the service and rescue tanks” and to “find an alternative site”. In particular, two layers of waste were found, plastic residues, rubber and aluminum, of which a first layer about twenty centimeters thick of various kinds of waste at a depth of about 4.8 meters from the ground level, and subsequently a second layer of waste from half a meter to a depth between 8.5 and 9 meters from the ground level.

The discovery of the buried waste was immediately communicated to the Public Prosecutor’s Office with a request by the mayors to “provide with extreme urgency to the verification of what was found, in order to be able to prevent environmental damage and risks from potential pollution”. The point where the discovery was made was indicated by Arpa Puglia as part of the in-depth analysis following the first discovery of waste outside the landfill lots, about a month ago.

The construction manager, the geologist Francesco Pezzati, therefore ordered the immediate suspension of the works. The mayors Colonna and Lovascio “without prejudice to the need to proceed with the sampling, analysis and monitoring of the groundwater of the three wells identified”, reiterate to the regional government “the absolute need not to foresee the reopening of the service and rescue tanks thus as required by the regional waste plan, identifying, through the involvement of the competent bodies, a new alternative site “.
