Ex-husband set her on fire: 18 years confirmed for Ciro Russo

(ANSA) – REGGIO CALABRIA, MAY 17 – Ciro Russo, the man who three years ago tried to kill his ex-wife by setting her on fire, was sentenced to 18 years and 8 months in prison. The Reggio Calabria Court of Appeal confirmed the first instance sentence of July 2020 adding 8 months for the continuation with a sentence for mistreatment of his wife remedied in the past. Russo on March 13, 2019, was escaped from house arrest that he was serving at his parents’ home in Ercolano (Naples) to go to Reggio Calabria to try to kill his ex-wife Maria Antonietta Rositani. He rammed his car, poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. Antonietta Rositani was saved only thanks to her strength of mind and her will to live. She got out of the car engulfed in flames and threw herself into a puddle as her ex-husband yelled “you must die”. The woman suffered severe burns that covered 50% of her body and only left the large metropolitan hospital of Reggio Calabria after 20 months and after having undergone dozens of surgeries.

At the end of the council chamber, the Court accepted the request of the Attorney General Gerardo Dominijanni and the deputy pg Francesco Tedesco. Russo, after trying to kill his ex-wife, fled. He was blocked by the investigators of the Reggio Calabria flying squad who tracked him down the next day near the hospital.

According to the indictment, Russo’s was a planned action.

In the first instance sentence, in fact, the judge of the Court of Reggio Calabria Valerio Trova wrote that the accused had planned “the criminal project in detail”.

“Women don’t get to this point. It’s not a victory 18 years in prison. It’s not nice to hear it after you have had children by the man you loved. I hope you have the strength to report so as not to get through to all what I’m going through “. She said, visibly moved, Maria Antonietta Rositani after the reading of the sentence. “Eighteen years – she added – are the minimum punishment after what he did to me and all my family.
