Tugboat sunk: two more missing are sought

(ANSA) – BARI, MAY 20 – The searches for the two sailors lost in the sinking of the tugboat Franco P., which took place on Wednesday evening about 50 miles from the coast, have continued all night and are still underway, for almost 36 hours. In the shipwreck, on which the Bari Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Port Authority are investigating, three crew members died, whose official recognition is in progress at the forensic medicine institute of the Bari Polyclinic. The only survivor, at the moment, is the commander of the tug, hospitalized in Bari.

On the two still missing, the Bari Coast Guard, with the support of air units and patrol boats from other military forces and the Croatian authorities, extended the search area by going further south. The causes of the sinking will have to be ascertained from the investigations coordinated by the prosecutor Roberto Rossi with the substitute Luisiana Di Vittorio. The statements of the commander will be useful, when he will be heard, and those of the 11 sailors on board the motor pontoon that was hooked to the tug at the time of the sinking and from which the alarm was raised.
