Tugboat sunk: third day of missing searches

(ANSA) – BARI, 21 MAY – Third day of searches off the coast of Puglia of the two sailors lost in the sinking of the tugboat Franco P., which took place on Wednesday evening about 50 miles off the coast of Bari, in international waters. Three members of the crew died in the shipwreck, on which the Bari Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating, the 65-year-old Luciano Bigoni and the 58-year-old Andrea Massimo Loi, both from Ancona, and the 63-year-old of Tunisian origin and resident of Pescara Jelali Ahmed. On the two still missing, the two Apulian seafarers, both from Molfetta (Bari), 59-year-old Mauro Mongelli and 60-year-old Sergio Bufo, the Coast Guard of Bari, with the support of air units and patrol boats of other military forces and authorities Croatian, has extended the research area by going further south. The only survivor among those who were on board the sunken boat at the time is the commander, the 63-year-old Giuseppe Petralia, hospitalized in Bari.

Meanwhile, the investigations coordinated by the prosecutor Luisiana Di Vittorio continue. Yesterday the pontoon that was hooked to the tugboat at the time of the sinking and from which the alarm was raised arrived in the port of Bari. The eleven people who were on board, eyewitnesses of the shipwreck, were heard throughout the day in the offices of the Port Authority. The pontoon was subjected to evidential seizure and in the investigation file, with the hypothesis of the crime of negligent cooperation in shipwreck and multiple manslaughter, the commander Petralia and the shipowner Antonio Santini, legal representative of the Ilma company of Ancona owner of the tugboat and the pontoon. In the next few days, the Prosecutor’s Office will evaluate whether to arrange the autopsy on the bodies of the three confirmed victims and will arrange the technical checks on the pontoon.
