Cei, assembly to choose the new president

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 22 – The CEI is about to turn the page: after the Bassetti-Russo management, the assembly will meet tomorrow to choose the new president. This is not just an appointment simply linked to mandate deadlines: from tomorrow the assembly of bishops will have to decide which paths the Italian Church wants to take, given the many unresolved issues in recent years and a certain ‘disappointment’ on the part of Pope Francis for incomplete or even stuck reforms. Among the names in pole position stand out those of Matteo Zuppi (archbishop of Bologna) and Paolo Lojudice (Siena). But Giuseppe Petrocchi (L’Aquila), Erio Castellucci (Modena) and Domenico Battaglia (Naples) could also be part of the triad that the bishops will perhaps already bring to the Pope on Tuesday, who is up to the final choice.

Among the most delicate issues that the new president will have to face is that of abuse. But today a new theme is added, that of the Pope’s ‘blessing’ to the pro-life world that the Italian bishops have always looked upon with a certain diffidence and distance. (HANDLE).
