(ANSA) – TRENTO, MAY 22 – A 55-year-old mountaineer from Contà (Trento) lost his life while, together with a companion, he was tackling the climb to the top of Presanella for the North Face with crampons and ice ax, and with skis attached to the backpack. The two climbers were about 50 meters from the summit when the man in front saw his companion slide, losing sight of him along the North Face. The call to 112 came shortly after 7.30.
The mountaineer’s body was spotted from the helicopter at the base of the wall, also thanks to the help of the manager of the Denza refuge who was observing the wall with binoculars. The rescuers were landed in hoovering but there was nothing for the man to do and the doctor could not help but ascertain his death. While waiting for the authorization for the recovery of the body, the helicopter tried to climb to recover the companion in shock, but the approach was not possible due to the wind. Consequently, two operators from the Vermiglio station were recovered downstream and taken to the Orobica bivouac in order to reach the mountaineer on foot and accompany him back downstream. Shortly after 9.30 a second attempt of approach by the helicopter was successful and the companion and the two rescuers were recovered at an altitude of about 3,300 meters and brought back downstream. After the authorization of the authorities, the body was transferred to Vermiglio. (HANDLE).
