(ANSA) – GENOA, 22 MAY – Two maxi classrooms to be used simultaneously to host one of the most important trials in Italy. The Genoa court found the solution to celebrate the hearings of the trial for the collapse of the Morandi bridge, the motorway infrastructure that collapsed on 14 August 2018, causing the death of 43 people. A solution that will see the use of the tent mounted in the court yard, set up already during the evidentiary incident celebrated during the pandemic, and the auditorium where the trials for the 2011 G8 events had already been held. presence of numerous defendants (59), over one hundred civil parties, lawyers (at least 200) as well as journalists from all over Europe and beyond: one of the latest broadcasters to ask for credit comes from Dubai. And it is not excluded that other civil parties may be added, namely those excluded by the judge in the preliminary hearing.
“It will be an epochal process – says the prosecutor of Genoa Francesco Pinto – and for this reason we believe it is very important that maximum accessibility and visibility be guaranteed”. The first hearing is set for 7 July. Then the panel of judges will postpone to September. There will be at least three hearings a week.
On trial there are 59 people, including former heads of Aspi and Spea, the subsidiary that was in charge of maintenance, the managers of MIT and the Superintendency of public works. The accusations range, for various reasons, from multiple manslaughter, willful collapse, attack on transport safety, falsehood. The two classrooms identified will be able to accommodate 500 people, the ‘minimum’ number to be considered in order to seat all parts of the process.
The idea is to allocate one of the classrooms to the court for the examination of the witnesses and the other to be able to follow the hearing via video link. An ad hoc area is being studied for the press while it should be remembered that during the first hearing many of the requests of civil parties that had been excluded in the preliminary hearing phase will resubmit the request to the hearing.
