In search of the former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who had previously announced that he had returned to his homeland, special forces went from Zugdidi to Batumi.

This was reported by the Mtavari Arkhi TV channel, citing its sources.

According to journalists, after Saakashvili’s announcement of his return, panic arose in the ranks of law enforcement officers. In the services of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a general mobilization was announced. Heavy machinery runs along the streets of large cities. The police conducted searches in the homes of residents of Anaklia – resort village near the administrative border of the region with Abkhazia.

Rebuttal

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Darakhvelidze denied information that the transfer of special units was carried out because of Saakashvili. Officials continue to believe that the former president remains in Ukraine, and the video released on October 1 was not made in Batumi.

As for the Office for Special Assignments, as I have already mentioned, special teams have been set up in all territorial bodies of Georgia to ensure that the elections are held in a peaceful and secure environment. The relevant police units were mobilized. There was no particular movement“, – said Darakhvelidze.

What awaits Saakashvili in Georgia

  • In Georgia, Saakashvili is involved in several criminal cases. In January 2018, the Tbilisi City Court found the former president of Georgia guilty of abuse of office and illegal early release from prison of former Interior Ministry officials and sentenced him to three years in prison.
  • In June 2018, the Tbilisi City Court sentenced Saakashvili in absentia to six years in prison for organizing an attack on Sandro Girgvliani, an employee of the United Georgian Bank.
  • And in May 2020, a diplomatic scandal broke out between Ukraine and Georgia, even the Georgian ambassador was recalled from Kiev. The reason for this was the appointment of Saakashvili to the post of head of the Executive Committee of Reforms under the President of Ukraine. In Georgia, then Saakashvili’s new appointment was called unacceptable, since he was convicted in absentia in his homeland and put on the wanted list. However, in April this year, Ambassador Teimuraz Sharashenidze returned to Kiev and Georgia announced the normalization of relations with Ukraine.
