Child overwhelmed by Carnival wagon, body builder sentenced

One year and six months for manslaughter is the sentence pronounced by the gup Claudio Paris for Paolo Canellini, owner and builder of the Carnival float on which Gianlorenzo Manchisi died on 5 March 2019, a child two injured during a parade in the historic center of Bologna and overwhelmed by the chariot itself. It is the first sentence, in abbreviated form, on the tragic affair, while in October the trial will begin for the child’s mother, Siriana Natali, who was with him, and for the test driver of the wagon, Marco Pasquini.

The judge also ordered provisional payments of € 300,000 in favor of the father and € 190,000 for the brother. The sentence is suspended and the defender, Stefano Sermenghi, exiting the courtroom announced to journalists that he will appeal. The judge also ordered the wagon to be destroyed.

“I thank my lawyer and the judge who was able to read in this case what was to be applied for safety – commented his father, Giuseppe Manchisi – it is an important first step for the safety of children and citizens”. “Another step – added the baby’s mother – will be cleared of the charges in October”.

Another trend concerns the heads of the Committee for Petronian events and the Organizing Committee of the ‘Children’s Carnival’, linked to the Curia: for them another investigating judge ordered the forced indictment, after having rejected the requests for archiving.
