(ANSA) – ORISTANO, MAY 27 – He is accused of having started on July 24 of last year, the devastating fire that destroyed over 20 hectares of land in Cabras, in the province of Oristano, destroying buildings, historic olive groves, vineyards and killing dozens of animals. Claudio Piero Pili, 60, of the place, ended up in prison on charges of arson. The man was arrested by the staff of the Forestry Corps of Oristano on the order of precautionary custody requested by the prosecutor Valerio Bagattini and signed by the investigating judge Federica Fulghesu. To nail it there are the painstaking investigations conducted by the Forestry on a series of fires.

According to the ordinance, Pili “famously made casual use of fire”, burned brush and waste in his land. During an inspection of the appurtenances of his home, piles of garbage and debris were found and four collection points were identified where they were burned. A way of acting that led the man over time to have frequent quarrels with the neighbors: the fire of 24 July appears to have been set just to damage a family. The flames were ignited in the early afternoon, on a day classified as “extreme danger”, at the same time as the Montiferru and Monte Acri were burning. During the extinguishing operation, a woman was saved while trying to secure her kittens, a house lapped by the fire was also evacuated. The damage was enormous and the Municipality of Cabras declared a state of natural disaster.

Less than a year after the fire, the Forestry has closed the circle with the arrest of the alleged arsonist. “The specific circumstances and the modalities of the event, in themselves a source of social alarm, evaluated in the light of the personality of the suspect, make us believe very concrete and current – writes the investigating judge in the ordinance – especially in coincidence with the approach of the fire season, the danger that if left free he will commit other crimes of the same kind “.
