A newborn with the umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a blanket, was found by the carabinieri in a basket in via Rametta in Catania.
His health conditions are considered good by the doctors who have examined him.
The carabinieri of the radio-mobile unit of Catania were found to find the newborn. They intervened after being reported by a passer-by to the provincial command operations center via 112. The basket was in a populated area of the city behind a dilapidated wall. The area is accessible to anyone.
Weapon soldiers discovered the newborn crying in a basket with the umbilical cord still attached and wrapped in a blanket. The child was immediately looked after by the carabinieri who, after wrapping him in another clean blanket provided by a local resident, placed him in the car in service awaiting the arrival of the 118 doctors. The newborn was then taken with an ambulance at the Garibaldi Nesima hospital in Catania. The doctors, after the first visit, noted the excellent state of health and have arranged, as a precaution, to be admitted to the Neonatology ward where he will remain under observation. Investigations are underway to identify the mother and the perpetrator of the abandonment. The Catania Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the case.
