(ANSA) – VENICE, MAY 29 – The ‘Adriatic twinning’ between Venice and the Ukrainian city of Odessa was celebrated this morning at the Giardini Reali, as part of the Sensa festival.
On the occasion, the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, gave the doge’s ring, a symbol of the bond, to the Ukrainian ambassador to Italy, Yaroslav Melnyk. The mayor of the Ukrainian city, Gennady Trukhanov, sent a thank you video, unable to be in the lagoon due to the ongoing war conflict.
Now the Ukrainian city will have in custody the ring returned by the capital municipalities of the Veneto: Belluno, Padua, Treviso, Verona, Vicenza had received the ring last year during the celebrations for the 1600 years of Venice.
After the ceremony, the water procession started and continued the celebrations of the Sensa, with the ‘Marriage of the sea’ and the celebration of Holy Mass in the church of San Nicolò del Lido. The Festa della Sensa is one of the main events in Venice. In fact, since the time of the Serenissima, an important ‘political’ moment in which the city, marrying the sea, guarantees its protection and commercial domination in the Adriatic and Mediterranean.
