(ANSA) – NAPLES, MAY 30 – The First Criminal Section of the Court of Naples North (president Agostino Nigro) sentenced the former carabiniere Lazzaro Cioffi to 15 years of imprisonment, found guilty of external complicity in international drug trafficking, of some episodes of corruption, money laundering and fictitious registration of assets. The deputy prosecutor of Naples Mariella Di Mauro, about to move to the Naples North Public Prosecutor’s Office where he will serve as an assistant prosecutor, had asked for a twenty-year sentence in prison for the former soldier of the weapon (bound by ties of kinship with a prominent element of organized crime). Cioffi, who for over 20 years has served in the Operational Unit of Castello di Cisterna, was arrested in 2018 on charges of being close to the Sautto-Ciccarelli clan of Caivano (Naples).
Cioffi’s name (defended by lawyers Saverio Campana and Giuseppe Stellato) also emerged from the investigation into the murder of the fisherman-mayor of Acciaroli Angelo Vassallo. He is currently being investigated in that proceeding. The judges ruled out the mafia aggravating circumstance and the prosecutor is preparing to appeal this decision. (HANDLE).
